A rich, challenging curriculum engages learners
"Demanding Content” refers to our rigorous academic program and
the high standards to which all students are held. EdisonLearning
has long recognized the importance of rich and research-proven
curricular programs in delivering a world-class education, and we
have developed a robust program for the 21st century – modeling
elements of the classical liberal arts program and applying them to
today’s information age. We believe that schools need to emphasize
the core disciplines of language arts, mathematics, science, and
social science, but also restore to a place of importance the arts,
world language, health, and physical education.
Customizing instruction to meet individual needs
Without instruction customized to the needs of each learner,
schools cannot ensure that every child is challenged, that every
child receives needed support, or that every child is fully
involved in his or her own learning. Our school design supports
teachers in reaching every child and empowers students to shape
their educational experience to meet their personal needs,
interests, and aspirations.
EdisonLearning’s commitment to providing teachers with the tools
that help students learn applies to all students, including those
requiring special education services or learning English as a
second language. A policy of responsible inclusion governs the
education of students with special needs. Students who have limited
English proficiency are supported by the SIOP model, Sheltered
Instruction Observation Protocol.
It takes not just time, but a smart use of time
Underlying the design is the critical realization that,
regardless of the strength of a school’s programs, true
customization of learning cannot be achieved unless students and
teachers have the time needed to take advantage of them.
EdisonLearning’s partnership schools provide a longer school day,
up to eight hours, so there is more time for the basics, more time
for small group and individualized instruction, more time for
enrichment, more time for hands-on experiences, and sufficient time
for special subject courses like physical education and art.
Resources that synthesize and focus
EdisonLearning’s development of its academic program is an
ongoing process and one to which the company brings a variety of
research and experience-tested resources. We have selected or
created particular curricular offerings that truly represent “best
of breed” teaching resources. But they are more than the sum of
their parts, because to achieve optimal results what matters more
than the quality of the resources is the quality of their use in
the classroom. The strength of the EdisonLearning academic program
is the holistic, systematic integration between the programs we
offer schools and the strong training and ongoing support we
provide that ensures excellence in instruction.
