Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academies to Help Ohio Dropouts Earn Their High School Diploma

Ten alternative schools that have been helping high school dropouts and at risk students in Ohio complete their education, earn their diplomas, and be prepared to either enter college or receive the necessary credentials to get a job upon graduation – will now be known as Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academies.
More than 700 students were enrolled in the 10 academies this past school year; four are located in Cleveland, four in Columbus, and two in Cincinnati. Last month, 104 eligible seniors received their high school diplomas from the Bridgescape Academies. Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academies are also operating in New Jersey and North Carolina.
“Our goal is to ensure that no student falls through the cracks,” said Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who last year formed a strategic alliance with EdisonLearning – which operates the Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academies. “All students should have the opportunity to receive their high school diplomas and be fully prepared for college or the workplace.”
Nationwide, nearly one in three U.S. high school students fails to graduate with a diploma. In total, approximately 1.1 million students drop out each year – averaging 6,000 every school day or one every 29 seconds. In Ohio, 1 out of 5 high school students drop out.
“We are committed to being part of the solution to this national crisis,” said EdisonLearning President and CEO Jeff Wahl. “The sense of accomplishment that lit up the faces of those 104 former dropouts in Ohio, fuels our commitment to help all students succeed.”
Unlike a traditional school setting, the Magic Johnson Bridgescape Academy program is a blend of one-on-one and group instruction, infused with interactive online offerings specifically tailored for each individual student.  Each Academy is staffed with on-site education teams to assist students in their daily studies. Two-thirds of the student’s instruction is provided by EdisonLearning’s eCourses and eSchoolware.
