Partnership Schools Step Up to Aid Haiti’s Earthquake
Victims
EdisonLearning’s
Eight Core Values are important components of the school design
deployed in our partnership schools all over the county.
Recently, a number of the schools put into practice the Core Value
of Compassion as they sought to provide assistance to the victims
of the Haitian earthquake. In total, EdisonLearning
partnership schools raised more than $11,700 in financial
contributions that went directly to Haitian relief efforts, as well
as thousands more in needed food and clothing items. This
remarkable effort is the result of the dedication and generosity of
following schools:
The students at the Duluth Edison Charter
Schools held numerous fund raisers including “Change
for Haiti” which raised over $700. In addition, the student
council of Washburn Academy collected first aid items, baby
formula, rice, beans, protein bars, toothbrushes, and much
more.
At Renaissance Academy in
Phoenixville, PA, teachers offered class time to learn more about
earthquakes, Haiti and crisis management. But, they went much
further. Over 1,000 members of the Renaissance Academy community -
teachers, staff, students and families held a Solidarity Walk and
collected more than $2,400.
A call to action for Dayton Leadership
Academies’ staff, students and parents was made in
response to the devastation in Haiti. Operation Haiti was
rolled out at both Dayton View and Dayton
Liberty Campuses, where students were encouraged to have
open discussions to alleviate any fears or apprehensions.
During the 2nd quarter awards programs, parents were invited to
donate and continue dialogue with their student(s).
The students of Derrick Thomas
Academy launched the “Save for Haiti” campaign, and
collected $1,816.42. The extent of the school’s commitment
needs to be framed in the fact that the 923 urban student
population, of which 86% receives free or reduced lunch, garnered
the means to assist the people of Haiti.
Andrew Wilson Charter School, in partnership
with the YMCA, collected supplies and donations for earthquake
relief.
The students of the Harriet Tubman Charter
School in the Bronx held a fundraiser and collected
$2,035 for the earthquake victims – an amount that will be matched
dollar for dollar by The Prince Hall Foundation – Haitian Relief
Fund.
Drew Tuomey and his 7th grade science/math class raised money by
visiting other classrooms at Edison Charter
Academy in San Francisco. By the end of their one week
effort, they had raised $1200. Edison Charter Academy is a school
with a large percentage of children in poverty, but these children
and their children gave unselfishly to those less fortunate than
themselves. The $1200 was donated to Doctors without Borders.
The students and staff of Omar D. Blair
Charter School in Denver came together with one
purpose in mind, to demonstrate our Core Values with a plan of
action. The students and staff agreed to donate at least
$1.00 per student and each staff member agreed to donate the cost
of a morning cup of Starbucks. Student Council members
visited classes asking everyone to come together behind this cause
and “Make It Happen!” At the end of their efforts, the school
donated $1,604.10 to the American Red Cross.
